How to Add a Custom Thumbnail to Your YouTube Video
Updated on February 9, 2026
When you upload a video, YouTube automatically picks 3 random frames from your clip. They are usually blurry, awkward, or boring. To get views, you need to upload your own custom design.
Step 1: Verify Your Account
YouTube doesn't unlock custom thumbnails by default. You must verify your phone number. Go to YouTube Studio > Settings > Channel > Feature Eligibility and enable "Intermediate features".
Step 2: Upload or Edit
Once verified:
- Go to YouTube Studio.
- Click Content and select your video.
- Under the "Thumbnail" section, click Upload Thumbnail.
- Select your 1280x720 JPG or PNG file.
- Hit Save.
